Jessica Spice opened the doors to Paragon of Play Learning Resource Centre in November 2023. A former ECE and current teacher & college course facilitator, Jessica wanted to better serve her community by offering a safe space filled with educational & enriching resources and activities for children, adults and families.
The centre offers several services such as tutoring, art programs, day camps, parenting classes, play therapy, paint nights, social events and much more. It has quickly become known in Belleville as a community space to get creative, build connections, and learn something new!
Jessica’s entrepreneurial journey is a true testament to what can happen when you let go of the “what ifs” and embrace the unknown head on. As a young female entrepreneur she knew that there would be barriers to face, some of which were her own anxieties. After much stress and many sleepless nights, Jessica learned to believe in herself and what she had to offer with Paragon of Play.
Looking back on those early days, Jessica shares, “I truly did not realize how much ‘trial and error’ would be a part of my business model! We frequently tried out programs (and still do!) that we believe would meet the needs of the community – sometimes it really is a hit, and sometimes our community gives feedback to help us alter the programming for the better. Sometimes that might include changing start times, age ranges, fees, etc.”
In their short time in business, Paragon of Play has worked closely with families in the area to improve their programming, which has supported the development of many strong community relationships. They continue to have open communication with families to ensure that the services offered are top notch and what is needed in the area.
As a Loyalist College graduate, Jessica was already aware of Trenval and the offerings within the community. She also followed them on social media and was impressed by the many successful partnerships and stories that their services brought forth for other entrepreneurs.
Jessica approached Trenval for free support and advice from the team, as well as guidance in applying for a ‘micro’ business loan. This supported her with start up costs like insurance, rent and utilities. She was also the recipient of the Starter Company Plus Grant, which empowered her to purchase quality supplies and resources.
Speaking on how these avenues supported her business in the early stages, Jessica explains, “I was able to start off on a very strong foot, which enabled my business to be self-sustaining within the first month of operation. I was able to manage the upfront costs of starting a business without having to take from my family’s finances.”
Paragon of Play has already made its mark on the Belleville community, and has many plans to continue to give back. Jessica aims to continue to expand the offerings at the centre, which will include daytime programming, more family & therapeutic offerings, as well as continuing to develop more local business partnerships. These partnerships allow them to continue to strengthen and expand their ability to serve the children, adults and families within the community.
“I am thrilled to already be adding to the Paragon of Play team as well,” Jessica shares excitedly. “I have had educators running the PA Day Camp Programs, running new classes at the centre, and most recently I developed two amazing community partnerships – one with Isaisaslime and the other with Taylor Nelson Certified Play Therapy., to offer highly in demand and beneficial programs for children.”
The centre supports other local businesses by taking field trips and doing other enrichment activities. High school and college students benefit from placement and volunteer opportunities within the centre. Adult programming allows grown-ups to make social connections and enjoy learning something new in an accepting and inclusive environment. And most importantly, children who attend Paragon of Play develop responsibility and life skills by helping to take care of the facility and materials.
Jessica is also looking forward to adding 8 new educators to the team in the summer to support in delivering their three highly sought after summer day camp programs.
On looking into the future, Jessica shares a thrilling update on what the community of Belleville can look forward to.
“I think that we will need a larger or second location sooner than anticipated. Although this is a big undertaking that feels a bit daunting, it is also so exciting and reassuring to see how Paragon of Play is being truly embraced as a local enrichment resource.”
